MY RIDE, MY LIFE. BEHAVIOR CHANGE PROJECT

Adolescent Youth Project

It is a nightmare of every parent with teens in the house after shocking news aired on television of students who were caught being drunk and engaging in sexual activities in a moving bus. Students call it the ultimate, wild pool party on wheels. This buses are known for very loud music, dark tints, immoral graffiti and airing of inappropriate videos of sexual in nature which attract most teen passengers. Adolescent girls are more vulnerable to contracting HIV in such buses due to their poor safe sex negotiating skills and intoxication from alcohol. The face of the pandemic in Kenya is primarily young, with majority being adolescents 15 to 19 years. In tackling the spread of HIV, education is vital. It has the potential to provide responsible and accurate information about HIV and AIDS, increase knowledge and change in attitude that will Encourage teens to take concrete action to protect themselves from HIV infection. My ride, my life. Behavior change project” aims at;

  1. Using Wi-Fi wireless networking technology, to conduct educative HIV/AIDS sessions via mobile phones ‘on the go’ in the moving bus.

  2. Develop messages on alleviation of stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS that will be portrayed through public bus branding; this messages will help to change the face of the town service buses from immoral painted graffiti to positive conveying messages.

  3. Project will carry-out educative video sessions on HIV awareness ‘on the go’ in the moving bus,

  4. Train bus drivers and bus conductors as health educators.

  5. The project will also establish condom drop points at bus terminals.

Project goal

To empower adolescent girls with knowledge on their sexual and reproductive health and increase their skills on how to prevent HIV and other STIs.
